We went to the chequers for the first time for a birthday celebration. We chose the tasting menu, which was excellent and better than expected, with the pleasant surprise of a birthday card and fudge. All the food was nicely presented. We will return!
What an pleasant find! Nice little pub in a quiet village. Great quality of food. Fabulous friendly service. It was brilliant to get a complimentary amuse bouche even though I stopped for a quick one course lunch. Served by the Head Chef himself! Hats off!
The Checkers Inn is a charming spot near Weston Turville Reservoir, with a clear focus on quality cuisine rather than your typical pub fare. It’s evident they’ve put a lot of thought into the menu, which feels more gastropub than traditional. Portions lean towards the smaller side, but the creativity and flavours make up for it. There is a tasting menu (as well as offers on 2/3 courses on the a la carte) We started with a rich truffle rarebit served in a pastry (mince pie escque) shell—great flavour, though a touch too punchy for me. My wife had the cured trout, which was beautifully presented and packed with bold flavours. For mains, I opted for a vegetable “lasagne,” which was a clever layering of different vegetables and sauces—light but satisfying. My wife’s fish was perfectly cooked, though I can’t recall the exact type. Dessert was the standout: sticky toffee pudding with fig, a lovely twist on the classic. The chips however were a little disappointing. The pub itself is cosy, with a lovely bar area by the fire—perfect if you’re stopping in after a walk. Service was friendly and relaxed, though not the quickest. It’s not the sort of place you’d come to if you’re in a rush, but ideal for a more leisurely, special meal (perhaps in the restaurant). Prices are fair for the standard of food, with set menus offering good value. All in all, it’s a great spot for a refined meal, especially in an area that could do with more places like this, it creeps up to 4 stars purely based on the focus on quality cuisine. Definitely worth a visit if you’re after something a different from the usual.
This is a fantastic pub that is well worth a visit if you are in the area. We've been a few times now and it has always been a good experience. The staff are friendly and welcoming the moment you walk in the door. The beers are well kept and every wine we have tried has been excellent. The food may be more expensive than some of the other pubs in the area but for the quality that you are getting it is very good value. We have had some dishes here that are knocking on the door of Michelin star quality. Great food, great service and in a lovely tucked out of the way location. Highly recommended.
We visited The Chequers Inn for my birthday and enjoyed the experience immensely. The menu was excellent, with a good range of dishes - simple food in reality but excellently delivered at a reasonable price. We had the salmon and the pea soup starters which were wonderful, the roast beef main which was superb (the beef melted in your mouth) although it could have done with a little more vegetable, and the chocolate mousse and Madeline, along with an aperol granita pre-dessert and bread. Probably the only criticism of the food wasn't that there wasnt more because it was so nice! The staff were lovely and friendly, and provided me with a card and small selection of chocolates as I had mentioned it was my birthday when booking - a lovely, thoughtful touch. Definitely worth visiting
